Freelance Jobs - What are Freelance Jobs?

By Barry Walls

Because of the global economic crisis attention to freelance jobs has started to rise. Those who have lost their jobs are starting to migrate towards the labor black market as well as seek freelance job opportunities. There always has been and there always will be a labor black market. Even before the economic crunch, many people had a second job and can be considered as "moon lighting." Often all taxes will be paid on the income from the first job; the second job is strictly cash, or mostly cash, and very little, if any, taxes will be paid on that income.

What is the definition of freelance jobs?

Freelance jobs are ones which anyone who has a little bit of training can do; employers of freelance workers usually don't have enough work to justify hiring a full time employee. The people who work as a freelancer can also be considered "self employed." Self employed doesn't have quite as nice of a ring to it, but it's essentially the same thing as a freelancer.

A popular reason many people did not consider becoming a freelance (self employed) worker was the assumed security that having a proper job with a contract and a regular pay check gave them. We have all seen this reason lose all meaning over the past year.

Other people never considered doing freelance work because they didn't believe in themselves enough and they figured there would be too much competition for the type of jobs in which they would be qualified to pursue. Because of the recent growing need for freelance workers the reasoning behind this issue also no longer holds water.

When it comes to bad economic times and companies only the strongest and the smartest survive. To ensure survival most companies will eliminate costs, often one of their biggest costs is their payroll. This means that companies have to cut the jobs of those who don't directly contribute to the profitably of the company in a major way.

Outsourcing jobs to countries that provide manpower at a fraction of the native manpower cost has been an established practice within the past few years; a prime example is phone support for customers. There has been a dramatic change and increase in possibilities for freelance work. Companies still need manpower to take care of the day to day operations of the company. They still require the services of people to do their gardening, to handle order fulfillment, provide customer service support, etc...These companies are realizing it makes more economical sense if they can use freelancers on an "as needed basis" instead of full time employees.

There are great opportunities available now that were not there even six months ago. Companies still need gardeners, maintenance men, delivery men, advertising copy writers and, even, order packers, security guards, fulfillment operators and a wide range of other staff members, but they don't need them full time. They can use freelancers to perform these duties on an 'as required' basis saving most of the costs associated with their payroll.

So, how do you find freelance jobs?

There are agencies out there who will find them for you! They are called 'temporary staff agencies' and will be able to talk to you and discover what your abilities are and then introduce you to potential clients who might want to buy your services. This is the easiest way to get freelance jobs but, once you are familiar with the way the system operates, you will be able to locate your own freelance jobs, negotiate your own terms and become a truly independent freelancer or self employed person.
