The newest generation of phones are the smart phones. These sometimes expensive cell phones are considered as big of an advancement as cell phones were to landlines. These smart phones have revolutionized the way we run business, run our lives and influence how we interact with the world at large.
I will first give a brief summary of what a smart phone is. A smart phone is an advanced cell phone that has the capabilities of a PDA or small laptop that fits in your pocket and has a much longer battery life. The smart phone can usually operate multiple functions at once, called applications. These applications can do things from making reservations at restaurants to video chatting with your friends to giving your laptop 3G internet access no matter where you are in the world.
Pros: Smart phones can act as an mp3 player, I know personally I never have to carry around my mp3 player anymore as I can just carry around my smart phone and use it in the car, or when walking or whenever. The amount of storage can now go to 32GB for the iphone 3gs which is an incredible amount of data for videos or mp3 files or pictures.
There are some fancy new features such as the touchscreen and motion sensing inputs that can create a wholly new and unique experience for the cell phone user.
Cons: One of the biggest problems is the battery life of most smart phones. As they have a processor and do complex tasks they use up a lot of their battery. Also their bright and high resolution displays often eat up battery life. However soon to be on the market are Organic LED phones which will almost double the battery life of current smart phones.
The biggest con of owning a smart phone is the sometimes outrageous monthly fee. You can end up spending over 100 dollars a month which ends up being 1200 dollars a year on your phone service! This is on top of the 200-400 dollar price range that they typically require when you first buy the phone as well.
With all of these things considered you first need to figure out why you want to buy this smart phone or not. Is it mainly used for entertainment purposes, or do you plan to run your business from it, or do you think it's just a cool accessory and don't really plan on using some of the more unique features. If you are not too serious about using this for business or for helping with important activities in your life then you should seriously consider the cost, because a 1200 dollar yearly bill is something to be considered. However if you have the extra money, it will entertain you endlessly and is a conversation topic.
Looking over the pros and cons, to summarize you should consider factors of how long you plan to use it between charges, do you have the extra money, how much do you want it to consume your personal life, do you really need the extra gadgetry, and have you done the adequate research to find the right smart phone for you.
