How To Make Arrangements For A Funeral Service

By Joanne Smith

Death is one of the harsh realities of our existence that we are least prepared for. Honouring the dead is a very old practice that has been continuously changing to suit the present times. Conventionally, a funeral service was conducted in church and the departed was paid last respects with hymns as well as a eulogy. But, the practice has witnessed significant change over time as a large number of people now desire to go for a more personal service for their near and dear ones.

Planning a funeral service, immediately after the death of a loved one can be a very disturbing and painful experience. One of the misconceptions about funeral services is that it is compulsory under law for the family of the departed to organize a service, but this is not true. Secondly, a lot of people hold the belief that a service has to be conducted in a church, which is also a misconception. It is crucial to realize that conventionally, such services were held in church but these days, with significance being attached to a personal touch, funeral services are being held more often in homes. Thirdly, such services do not require the presence of either the pastor or the casket and can be easily held without either.

However, keeping in line with the idea of a personal funeral service, a lot of thought should be given to the preferences of the dead person. The choice of music must be from among the personal options of the dead, though it is advisable to have soothing music. You could choose from a live music band or going with pre recorded music.

Some families opt for display of the personal items of the deceased in a collage, for the gathering to reflect on his or her life. Address is very crucial in all funeral services inclusive of the personal ones. It could be a recital, a song or a personal speech that reflects upon the dead person.

Lastly, it is recommended to present the people gathered for the service with some souvenirs that help them keep the memories of the deceased alive for a long time.
